MRI for Back Pain

Clear Answers. Better Outcomes.

Back pain can be frustrating, unpredictable, and deeply disruptive to your daily life. At HQ Chiropractic in Odessa, we’re committed to helping you get clear answers quickly through advanced imaging services, starting with MRI for back pain.

Our state-of-the-art magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technology allows us to take highly detailed pictures of your spine and surrounding soft tissues using strong magnetic fields and radio waves. Unlike CT scans or X-rays, MRI provides greater contrast and clarity when evaluating conditions that may be causing your discomfort.

With our upright MRI option, we can also scan you in a natural seated or standing position, helping reveal structural issues that may only be present when gravity is at work.

What Can an MRI Show for Back Pain?

An MRI scan is one of the most reliable diagnostic tools for evaluating back and spine issues, especially when pain persists or doesn’t respond to physical therapy or conservative care. Your doctor may recommend an MRI if you experience:

  • Chronic Lower Back Pain
  • Numbness or Tingling Down the Legs
  • Sudden Weakness in the Legs
  • History of Trauma or Spinal Injury
  • Poor Response to Treatment

An MRI shows detailed images of your lumbar spine, spinal cord, and surrounding soft tissues. It can help diagnose:

  • Herniated or Bulging Discs
  • Spinal Stenosis
  • Pinched Nerves
  • Tumors or Infections
  • Degenerative Disc Disease
  • Inflammatory Conditions like Arthritis

How Does an MRI Work?

MRI uses strong magnetic fields and radio waves, not radiation, to produce images of internal body parts. You’ll lie or sit on a table that slides into the MRI scanner, which surrounds you with a powerful magnet. For upright MRIs, you may remain seated or stand during the scan.

Depending on your case, your provider may recommend a contrast dye to highlight specific tissues or inflammation. This dye is generally safe, but may not be used if you have a history of allergic reactions or certain medical conditions.

Most scans last 30–60 minutes, and you can return to normal activities shortly after unless otherwise advised.

Preparing for Your MRI Scan

Here’s what to keep in mind before your scan:

  • Avoid wearing metal objects like jewelry, belts, or zippers
  • Inform staff of any metal implants, surgical hardware, or pacemakers
  • Let your provider know if you're claustrophobic, as our open upright MRI can help
  • Discuss any previous allergic reactions if contrast dye may be used

If you're pregnant, breastfeeding, or have other medical concerns, our staff will review options to ensure your safety and comfort.

Do You Need an MRI for Back Pain?

Not every case of back pain requires imaging, but if your symptoms are severe, persistent, or worsening, an MRI may be the key to identifying the underlying cause. Our team can work with your physician, chiropractor, or physical therapist to determine whether imaging is appropriate.

MRI can be especially helpful when:

  • Pain limits your ability to function or sleep
  • You’ve had a recent injury or fall
  • Other diagnostic tools (like X-rays) were inconclusive
  • Surgery is being considered
  • You’ve completed physical therapy with no improvement

Talk to us about your symptoms! We’ll help you determine whether MRI imaging is the next best step.
